Johannesburg - A five-year-old boy was killed when he was flung out of a car during an accident at the intersection of Park Street and Pretoria Road in Oaklands, north of Johannesburg, on Thursday night, said paramedics.
ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said a BMW and a VW Golf collided at 19:45 and the boy was thrown out of the VW onto the pavement.
Netcare911 spokesperson Nick Dollman said one of the cars drove into the intersection without stopping at the stop sign.
Dollman said: "According to the metro police officer a Volkswagen was travelling up Pretoria Road to the M1 and was t-boned on the passengers side by a BMW.
"The VW spun around before landing in a ditch that had been dug to install traffic lights."
The boy was already dead when paramedics arrived, said Dollman.
One of the four VW occupants suffered a fractured arm and head injuries and was in critical condition.
The other three were in serious, but stable conditions.
Fire-fighters had to use the jaws-of-life to free one of the injured from the wreck.
The BMW driver was resuscitated by paramedics and later ran away when he heard that the boy had died, said Dollman.
All the injured were taken to Helen Joseph Hospital.
