Boy injured in gang shooting

2012-07-08 07:53

Cape Town - A 21-year-old man was arrested after he was found in possession of an illegal firearm after a shooting incident in Steenberg on Saturday, Western Cape police said.

Warrant Officer November Filander said two people were wounded during a shooting incident at around 17:45.

"Its alleged that rival gangs fired shots at each other in Parken Court when two bystanders were wounded during the shooting," Filander said.

"Police officers on patrol arrested him in possession of a 9mm pistol, serial number filed off, with two magazines and nine ammunition rounds."

Filander said a 12-year-old boy was wounded in his back and a 23-year-old man in his right hand during the shooting.

He was expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Get our lazy army in to sort these gangs out... Give them something to do, they've been dormant for years!!!

      Barefoot - 2012-07-08 08:23

Why are they lazy? if at your workplace there are no clients and are waiting are you lazy? there is no war does that mean they are lazy? you should read up on the peace keeping missions they are deployed in currently- armchair activists always think they are better than the rest.

      jason.children - 2012-07-08 09:14

LOL Barefoot, our military is a joke. However, this call for the military to police the gang areas is wrong!!!! The reason is, soldiers are trained to kill, not to arrest! A people can not be policed by its own military. Its been proved time and time again around the world. What we should be calling for is a return of specialized units, like the Gang Unit, and Narcotics Bureau. These were so easily thrown out by our PC, it smacked of politician BS at the time. The fact that the big drug and Gang issues are in the Western Cape, and the Western Cape is run by the DA! So the ANC closes down the two units that make some difference! Now we sit with a problem and the ANC can point fingers.

  • gee.raaf - 2012-07-08 08:05

By all means, kill each other. SA don't any more criminals, as it already has criminals in government. But please, go have a nice shootout far from innocent people.

Wow not again! It's the 3rd or 4th article on gang related incidents in the space of 24hrs on News24.A real problem this is in the Cape.I sincerely hope that the Province and ordinary citizen's gets to come out on top of all this and gangsters don't ruin life for everyone else who are just trying to live a civilize existence.

      jason.children - 2012-07-08 09:27

Sean, what we need is a Gang Task force started using Metro Police (SAPS are controlled at a National Level, and the ANC is useless). Get a team of no BS hard ass Colored Cops!(they know the people and the culture) Get an ex Task Force Instructor to give them some added tactical training etc. And give them offices with holding cells etc. Let them start by rounding up all known Gangster, all those wearing gang colors and all those with Gang tats! Photograph them, Fingerprint them, open up files on all of them and interview them. Start gathering an intelligence network. We have to start somewhere............enough talk we need action.

Yet another " colourful " incident involving the gangs of the Cape.

  • Barefoot - 2012-07-08 08:19

reading all these articles you'd think there is a war going on over there- this is really out of hand, it would be nice to be reactionary to call out the army only if it was possible to put them under operational command of the local police

      jason.children - 2012-07-08 09:24

The Army can not police its own citizens!! Its not trained to.

  • ganon.nhubunga - 2012-07-08 08:19

      Gogs Lombard - 2012-07-08 08:38

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-07-08 09:07

erm, why is there a provincial MEC for safety and security then?!

      samoras - 2012-07-08 09:53

@Gogs Lombard\r\n\r\nThe DA runs this province don't forget that were is the city police they can also bring them why not or its only for whites areas..

These gangs are ruining the Western Cape, obviously it's too much for SAPS. Its about time they must bring the ARMY!!!!

      rob.baggaley - 2012-07-08 09:39

      See above.

  • Khaya - 2012-07-08 09:53

It is totallu unfair to blame the ANC for WC failures, instead of blaming the provincial gvt there and the city of CT. DA cares less about the areas affected by drugs because they are mainly Black and Coloured occupied. They are applying the old apartheid tactic that they used when they allowed taverns to blossom in every corner of our townships. This time they are using drugs as their strategic tool to defocus Blacks. SHAME ON YOU.

      jason.sole.92 - 2012-07-08 10:06

Khaya - your comment is so obviously devoid of sanity that it is almost difficult to respond to without shaking ones head and chalking up another idiot voter for the ANC.

  • flysouth - 2012-07-08 10:08

No - this cannot be happening surely? After all, do we not recall the extraordinary propaganda engaged in by the SAPS to coerce and intimidate lawful gun-owners to surrender their guns under the Firearms Control Act, just a couple of years ago? How we were assured that this new law would make certain that violent crime using firearms would be virtually eliminated, if only the legal owners of guns - i.e. those who do NOT commit gun-crime (the stats show that) - would give up their rightful possesions? And how we were told that somehow this surrender by the law-abiding would result in criminals not having guns anymore - although that side of it was never really explained rationally! So tell us Mr. President - what has happened and how do these thugs get guns? Epic fail- again!
