Boy risks death for new bike

2012-07-17 11:19

Pretoria - A 12-year-old Pretoria boy is fighting for his life after he rushed into a burning house to save his new bicycle.

Beeld reported that Michael van Vuuren sustained 82% burn wounds and was on a ventilator after the wooden house in which he lived with his parents in the back yard of another house in Silverton,  Pretoria, caught fire.

Michael’s mom, Rina van Vuuren, woke up on Sunday morning and saw flames in the house.

She carried Michael outside and went back to get her husband Johan, who had had a stroke a few years ago.

But Michael ran back to get the new bicycle his sister had given him for his birthday. His mother again ran back to rescue him and kept him awake until emergency services arrived.

“When I was with him (on Sunday) at the hospital, he could breathe by himself and he told me: ‘I’m going to get better, mom, I’m coming home quickly’.

“He is a real little fighter, he lets nothing and no one hold him back.”

But his condition has deteriorated since then and he was again placed on a ventilator. Doctors said he was in a critical condition.

The family lost everything in the fire.

So terrible, and before people chirp that it was illogical, you don't understand the priorities and thoughts of a kid. We all hold certain things in such high regard that we make perhaps unwise decisions in respect of them.. To him the bike from his sister was obviously, at that time, worth saving. Hope he recovers and that the family is ok with insurance etc

Mark, if you read the story you'll see the husband is disabled by a stroke - the family was living in "a wooden house" probably a zozo hut. Insurance is probably just a distant dream. Insurance is for the haves not the have nots.
