Johannesburg - The body of a 13-year-old boy who drowned at a dam in Alberton was recovered by police divers on Saturday morning, said Captain Manaka Raphulu.
The boy drowned in the dam at the New Market Race Course on Friday evening but a search had to be called off due to bad lighting in the area, he said.
"He was walking home to Roodekop with his friends and brother when they realised he was no longer walking behind them. The boys then went back in search of him and they saw him in the dam, experiencing some difficulties," said Raphulu.
The boy's 11-year-old brother then dived into the dam but efforts to rescue him proved fruitless as he got entangled in the reeds and drowned.
"The reeds made it very difficult for the 11-year-old to save his brother. His big brother drowned," said Raphulu.
The boy's body was recovered at 09:30 on Saturday.
