Johannesburg - A young child whose mutilated body was found on the East Rand may receive a pauper's funeral unless he can be identified, police said on Friday.
"The body was found under the N17 bridge at Nooitgedacht Farm next to Devon, Springs," said Inspector Thabiso Ncongwane of the Secunda police.
He was discovered by a cattle herder around 24:00 on July 15.
"His private parts were almost completely cut off," said Ncongwane.
"The motive for his killing is unknown but is believed to be muti-related."
The boy's age is between seven and nine. He was found in his school clothes - khaki shirt, grey trousers - and was wearing red takkies.
"It took place so long ago," said Thabiso Ncongwane, "and the boy's identity is still unknown."
Police are urging anyone who might have known him to come forward so that he can be buried by family.
The may contact detective constable George Mbedzi at the East Rand serious and violent crime unit on 072-128-1699 or 011-871-5603 or 08600-1011.
