Boys videotape horrific gang rape

2012-04-18 08:10

Johannesburg - A shocking video has emerged in which seven boys gang rape a 17-year-old girl in Soweto.

Eyewitness News reported that the boys, who were between 14 and 20, were arrested on Tuesday.

The video was made on a cellphone and is about 10 minutes long.

The girl could clearly be heard to be crying and pleading with her attackers, who repeatedly rape her.

The boys apparently offered her R2 to keep quiet.

The video showed several acts of penetration as well as the boys joking around and encouraging each other while talking about whether the victim was crying or not.

A police spokesperson said the girl had gone missing three weeks ago, and is still missing. She was apparently left with an elderly taxi driver in Dobsonville.

It was believed that she had been kidnapped by the boys and kept as a sex slave.

Children doing this, they learn from the eleders

But then again there is a bigger case of a young girl whose life will never be the same.

The decay of moral society, how sad it is...

      Newsmonger - 2012-04-18 08:33

Know reading this sinks my heart - I had faith in this country now I do not know. Think I must look across the oceans, not wanting to but I will not subject my children one day to this. I am a new home owner that has spent ten months renovating and just completed but stories like this make me think there is no answer or solution here.

      dumisiledee - 2012-04-18 08:36

@Wesley as painfull as it is I have to agree with you there sir! they do learn from their elders whether its parents, priests, teachers etc but they look up to someone. There are no morals being taught to our kids anymore. Charity begins at home, if your kids have solid foundation its really difficult for them to be involved in such as their conscious will kick in. I've given up really

      Rob - 2012-04-18 08:37

Yes Wesley & there are thousands more of the calibre of these seven. They are the real " haters " who indulge in murder, rape & theft on a daily basis. Disgusting, barbaric people who have no place in society, yet they live, breath & breed amongst us everyday.

      Nicholas - 2012-04-18 08:48

What is not mentioned in this report is that she is mentally disabled.

      Andre - 2012-04-18 08:48

They are worse than animals, a bitch beieng on heat all the male dogs in the area will mate, To me they are all just like dogs, feel very sorry for the woman, she did not ask for that, Castrate them and give them a hole to pee out off for the rest of their lives and to all rapists!!!!!

      Jacqueline - 2012-04-18 08:51

@Nicholis: And the fact that she is disabled makes what bit of difference?? Rape is rape is rape regardless of sex of the victim, age, race, mental status etc.

      tcmotsoto - 2012-04-18 08:57

This explains why our constitution needs a serious re-shake,its just 2 lenient n crimanals get away from their crimes very easy, the crimal act must change with the justice act also. No parent want 2 see his child be raped or be a rapist,if a parent supports his child that means he dont stand against injustice!

      tracy.moller - 2012-04-18 09:00

Other problem is that Gov is so busy with their own agendas and policing adults who smoke and bars that sell alcohol they've forgotten about the youth. You never hear officials speaking about illegal sex. Schools don't have talks bout it the way they do drugs and drinking. That it has come to this where we now have to educate our youth about illegal sex.....shows what our country is coming to and what type of leaders we have.

      Jan - 2012-04-18 09:10

What a crap. Wesley, sometimes kids and adults do bad things where parents or their guidance has no influence on.

      Rob - 2012-04-18 09:14

bluzulu: BS....who's example are they following? On the other hand maybe you are correct and they have not learnt this behaviour........... ......It comes natural to some I guess!

      Rational100 - 2012-04-18 09:30

Correct and u can take this a bit further and ask yourself why is it that most coloured surnames tend to be of western origin? (Peterson from peter's son, Johnson from john's son etc). Truth be told kids get their surnames from the males and for a longtime, apartheid planted this painful seed of immorality...largely evident in SA.

I never loose hope in my News24 Readers and they never disapoint me- I knew they will find a way to include the racism, the ANC, the President and Julias Malema into this.... Marion - 2012-04-18 09:32

@Nicholas - that is even more tragic because she probably couldn't even understand what was happening to her, so how will she process it?

      schalk.mattheys - 2012-04-18 09:55

@ Muhammad, Dude, youre obviously not thinking clearly. Have you heard of "Honour killing?" It is common practice in many Isalmic countries. Male family members, usually a brother or cousin, sometimes even the father, kill the rape victim to protect the family honour. If you dont believe me, just google it.

      pelmane.mulongo - 2012-04-18 09:56

The world is rotting, the society is decaying, the country is derailing. What is more painful is that these boys know they will be released into the custody of their parents. Whatever that means, something sure is they know they will not be punished for the crime they did. They are teenagers, they will say. What a sick shamefully lenient law we have in this modern world!

      Liz - 2012-04-18 10:44

@Libratwin - Very sadly disabled people - particularly mentally disabled or those with communication problems are actually targetted by these sexual predators. Anybody who works with disabled people can tell you that so in my thinking it does make a difference - they are much more vulnerable to frequent abuse and rape.

      Michael - 2012-04-18 11:15

OMG, this is a horror movie. I guess this is what happens when some kids are neglected by parents, delegating their responsibilities to TV, movies and gadgets. We must reassess our parenting duties whether they are being fulfilled to a bare minimum.

      Nicholas - 2012-04-18 13:47

@Marion and Liz, my point exactly. It was reported that she was targeted (and has been several times in the past) because of her disability. So yes, it does make this crime even more sickening.

      Eduard - 2012-04-18 16:04

LOL Bluezulu, only 7 you say? If only it was just these 7 boys. I hate to give you some bad news... it's not just 7 and this is not the first and I CAN guarantee you it won’t be the last.

      Christopher - 2012-04-18 08:42

@Bluzulu...yes lets all be positive that only 7 boys gang raped a single girl. One Rape is too many dude! I don't know in your culture how it works but Every 17 seconds a person is raped in South Africa... Where's the positivity in that?

      bluzulu - 2012-04-18 08:50

I realise this however these 7 boys are not indicative of a nation of RSA citizens as Nige here would like yous to believe. Wonder if he is being paid for his Indoctrination lessons.

      bluzulu - 2012-04-18 09:09

Christopher , These 7 kids are criminals so an entire culture is found guilty. Makes sense.............NOT

      Merven - 2012-04-18 09:10

Come on bluzulu, now this, last week a kid murdering his family, every week we see horrible crimes and look at the age of most of these criminals. When is the last time you've read of a 50 year old raping and or murdering someone brutally? We have some of the highest murder and rape stats in the world. You confuse pessimism with reality.

      JohhnyBGood - 2012-04-18 09:12

@blu, I cant believe that you believe the drivel that you type. http://www.rape.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=875 Here is a start... It is estimated that a woman born in South Africa has a greater chance of being raped than learning how to read.[87] One in three of the 4,000 women questioned by the Community of Information, Empowerment and Transparency said they had been raped in the past year.[88] A survey conducted among 1,500 schoolchildren in the Soweto township, a quarter of all the boys interviewed said that 'jackrolling', a term for gang rape, was fun.[88] More than 25% of South African men questioned in a survey admitted to raping someone; of those, nearly half said they had raped more than one person, according to a new study conducted by the Medical Research Council (MRC).[89][90] It is estimated that 500,000 rapes are committed annually in South Africa.[91] A 2010 study led by the government-funded Medical Research Foundation says that in Gauteng province, home to South Africa's most populous city of Johannesburg, more than 37 percent of men said they had raped a woman. Nearly 7 percent of the 487 men surveyed said they had participated in a gang rape.[92]

If I had a daughter and someone did that..I would put my 12 month salary on their heads..coz I know police wont do shyt!!!

      Christopher - 2012-04-18 09:20

@bluzulu...well right now it seems to be a culture thing, As this government is rotten to the core, We have Mr Showerhead as your(he is not mine) president, He is coming on five wives, I wonder how the older wives think about it, as he changes his wives like a used car...No woman wants to be shared with other woman, why cannot a woman in your culture have many husbands?? Because the men are sexist and think "culturally"(damn good excuse) we allowed to do that.... BS

      Marion - 2012-04-18 09:47

@Christopher - You are right, one rape is one rape too many. But am I to understand that approx 1.9 million woman are raped in SA every year (if I did my sums right)? @bluzulu - I agree that you cannot blame an entire culture for the actions of the deviant individuals in their culture.

      Afrikopite - 2012-04-18 10:12

@CHRISTOPHER, Where does this black / white thing come in, savage is savage and bluezulu is wrong. So dont come here and try to play that dirty card of yours.

      Christopher - 2012-04-18 10:31

I am just saying...stats and facts show that majority of the rapes in South Africa, predominantly occur in the black sector of the population. I understand the black population is the majority, but even in ratio to white/indian/coloured blacks have a way larger ratio of rapes. Its just fact. You can googled it..

      Christopher - 2012-04-18 10:36

@ Marion...... some more statistical information on rape. the link: http://www.rape.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=875 Rape South Africa Rape is an occurrence which, according to official statistics occurred approximately 16,000 times annually during the 1980s. By 2006 the official figure for rape was over 55 000 , unofficially, based on the premise put forward by the National Institute of Crime Rehabilitation that only one in twenty rapes are reported, the figure is over 494,000 a year. This means that on average approximately one thousand three hundred women can be expected to be raped a day in South Africa. A study by Interpol, the international police agency, has revealed that South Africa leads the world in rapes. A woman was raped in South Africa every 17 seconds. This did not include the number of child rape victims. It was estimated that one in every two women would be raped. Between 28 and 30 percent of adolescents reported that their first sexual encounter was forced. Of South African men who knew somebody who had been raped, 16 percent believed that the rape survivor had enjoyed the experience and had asked for it. According to a recent study police estimated that only one in 36 rape cases was reported and of those only 15 percent culminated in a conviction.

      bluzulu - 2012-04-18 11:12

@ Christopher, the link: http://www.rape.co.za/index.php? option=com_content&task=view&id=875 According to this website the USA suffers a rape every 2 minutes,,,,Whats your call on this fact?

      Christopher - 2012-04-18 11:36

@BluZulu...thats probably correct...And given they have a population of over 310 000 000 people as to our 50 000 000 people...then I can say we have a serious problem, and it all boils down to good governance and education. The better the public is educated the less this kind of thing will happen, but unfortunately education and the well being of the South African people is the least worrying factor for this government...

      bluzulu - 2012-04-18 12:10

The US has all the education they require and yet every 2 minutes. Listen there are sickos all over the world, cos this happened here is not indicative of a Nation or Youths as a whole. We do not exercise ignorance and label sectors of RSA society cos' an individual from that sector committed a crime....BE REASONABLE PLEASE.

      Christopher - 2012-04-18 12:19

@bluzulu...I am being factual..Facts are facts. Every 2 minutes in America Rape occurs with a population of 300 000 000, in South Africa with a population of only 50 000 000 rape occurs every 17 seconds...There is something seriously wrong!! thats again the Government...and thats a fact!

      Christopher - 2012-04-18 12:26

work it out. America Population 300 000 000, 1 rape every 2 minutues. South africa 50 000 000 1 rape evert 17seconds. So you looking at 7 rapes to americas 1, but now they have a population 5 times bigger than ours,So that means you take 5 x 7 rapes=35 rapes. That means South Africa has 35 rapes to America's 1 rape...Tell me now its all of a muchness...hell no!!

      newelld - 2012-04-18 12:48

@Christopher you need to check your maths there... The size of the population makes no difference you only need to look at the rates at which rape is occurring. So if SA has one every 17 seconds and the USA 1 every 2 minutes, that means that SA has 7 times as many rapes per minute compared to the USA, not 35...

      Pieter - 2012-04-18 12:48

@Bluzulu, if you want to compare SA to USA you need to get your numbers correct. USA is 6.2 time larger than SA. Thus to get a fair comparison you need to adjust our population to equal that of the USA. Thus we need to divide 17 by 6.2 to get a fair comparison. Rounded up, if we had a population of 310 000 000, that will result in a rape stat of one rape every 3 seconds. 3 seconds vs 120 seconds is quite a big difference I might say.

      Marion - 2012-04-18 14:20

@Christopher - I had an idea of what the stats were from a few years back, although, to be honest, I thought the 1 in 9 campaign meant that 1 out of 9 women who are raped report it. Now it seems that only 1 in 36 rapes is reported. The way I worked out my figures, based on the 17 seconds is that there are 31536000 seconds in a 365 day year therefore if a woman is raped every 17 seconds it means approximately 1.9 million women are raped every year. (Quite happy to be corrected on my calcs and to be told if my logic is totally off the mark). By the way, I wasn't getting at you, I'm just questioning the stats of every 17 seconds.

      jmlongwe - 2012-04-18 20:53

Anyone who uses statistics to describe the SA situation is a fool, firstly they dont make sense mathematically and with common sense, if women were raped every 2 seconds im sure evey South African woman would have been raped by now. So you saying they just hiding it? I did my statistics at varsity and even my lecturer used to say not to take these things that serious as they are an 'indication'/' for comparison purposes, not literally.

Rally your facebook and email contacts to organise a Parent's March in major cities demanding the return of the death penalty and punishment to fit the crime. I can even recommend a date. Make it a birthday give to the president of SA. That will get you world attention and the government is sure to take note. I suggest do this before freedom of press is totally removed. It's SA's only hope.

  • NrGx - 2012-04-18 08:17

DISGUSTING! my heart goes out to that poor girl. Children are performing these heinous acts, what is this country coming to, or should I say, has become! We are constantly pushed into a corner by criminals and the government, which i believe is a very dangerous position for this country. Law abiding citizens CANNOT take much more and something BIG is going to happen very soon.

      Martin-Cullen - 2012-04-20 04:51

Why wait, start the big thing now. Contact everyone on your face book and emails to organise a Parent or Citizen March in major cities demanding return of the death penalty and punishment to fit the crimes. If mothers and woman in a neighboring country could do it successfully, then why not Mothers, Fathers, daughters, sons, husbands, wifes, brothers + sisters. Think about it! LOL

  • senny.tloubatla - 2012-04-18 08:18

Ya, moral decay, boys without fathers, boys whose fathers ill treat women, the end result of men making babies as if the they were fertilizers. These kids raised in single homes with no guidance, discipline and principles. These boys are just simply doing what their fathers are doing, disrespecting women and behaving like animals. Men who failed at being men have drummed in this behaviou into the young boys. This is armageddon, i tell you, we need divine intervention, we are truly sheep without a shepherd.

      Olive - 2012-04-18 08:32

I raised my children as a single parent and they are fine upstanding citizens. PLEASE don't imply that children raised in a single parent home turn out to be criminals!!!! You also insult animals - animals don't behave like these monsters!!!!

      marlene.buysse - 2012-04-18 09:41

I completely agree domniquez. They were aware, and in control, of their actions when they assaulted that girl and cannot resort back to being mere 'children' now that they have been caught and need to face the consequences.

      Flavia - 2012-04-18 11:51

This is the result of X-rated stuff on the Internet, cell phones and TV that clearly mess with men's minds (young and old) and is also a result of learnt behaviour from older men. They will have an idea of what that girl went through, however, it's to late for her. She will have to live with it for the rest of her life.

      Mark - 2012-04-18 08:39

Sorry dude - this has nothing to do with porn. The type of porn easily found on the net doesn't focus on rape or rape fantasies. I fear the motivation and problem here is more of a cultural thing.

      Martin-Cullen - 2012-04-20 04:20

  • PatrickLlewellynThomas - 2012-04-18 08:30

I read this story and inside I got so angry that boys of that age treat females with disgusted and see them as a dogs! I'm sick of a generation of boys and so called men that can't treat females with respect and see them as ladies that deserve the best! A true generation is lost and real gentlemen have now become a thing of the past. All the men reading this, when last did you do a small simple act for your girlfriend, friend that is a lady or wife??? When last did you even insist to open the car door for them??? Where have the MEN gone??!!!???!??!?!?!? Boys, start treat ladies the way they deserve to be treated with love and respect! Its a complete cycle. You respect them they respect you!

Seconded, I'd rather deal with taking the law into my hands and with our justice system I'll get 7 years prison life which in total will be 3 and a half years that will be cut down for good behaviour which means I can end up serving 2 years in jail and that will be worth it.

  • Jacqueline - 2012-04-18 08:34

A few years ago there was a study/documentary about the youth of South Africa. A shocking realization was that rape was not seen as a crime by black youths. They didn't see anything wrong with it as it is an everyday occurrence in their community. The film makers were shocked by this mentality, as am I. Here is a link to a site which addresses "Jackrolling". It is basically gang rape for status and notoriety. http://www.csvr.org.za/wits/papers/paplvsl.htm AS many may dislike what I am about to say, I hope this girl is found and brought back to her family but I think she will never be the same girl she was. These horrible "things", I refuse to call them men, have taken something from her that can never be regained, memories that can never be forgotten and a life that is forever changed. My heart breaks for this girl.

      Lee - 2012-04-18 08:44

I once counselled a boy who jackrolled someone. I know it sounds incredible, but they literally don't see it as rape. Once it was explained, he broke down. He was 16 at the time and he has now become a productive member of our society - but it really was an horrific situation - to see the dawning realisation of what he done and the brutality of what his victim will have to remember for the rest of her life. There are no winners here - everybody loses. What have we done to our youth :-(

      JohhnyBGood - 2012-04-18 09:25
