Johannesburg - A Johannesburg man has been arrested for allegedly robbing a shop in the city's business district after a customer tailed his gang afterwards, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

Three men allegedly robbed the Vula Zonge shop at the corner of Bree and Loveday streets on Wednesday around 16:00, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said.

"They pretended to be customers, one of them pulled out a firearm and instructed every person to lie down."

When the trio left the shop they were unaware that one of the customers was following them. The customer then spotted a police vehicle and alerted them about the three men, Mbele said.

One man was arrested, but his accomplices allegedly fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money and a firearm.

Mbele said the 22-year-old man would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon on a business robbery charge.
