Johannesburg - Suspended prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach was expected to challenge her suspension by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Labour Court on Monday.

The New Age reported on Thursday that Breytenbach, the suspended regional head of the specialised commercial crime unit, argued in court documents submitted in the Labour Court in Johannesburg that the NPA had "ulterior motives" when it suspended her.

She believes her suspension - by acting National Director of Public Prosecutions Nomgcobo Jiba - was an attempt to protect former crime intelligence head Lieutenant General Richard Mdluli.

The NPA has denied this. It said the suspension was in connection with her conduct in cases that had been allocated to her.

The NPA also accused her of being guilty of improper conduct, because she accused her employer of, among other things, fraud when she filed her urgent application with the Labour Court.

On Tuesday, the NPA postponed Breytenbach's disciplinary hearing until July 23.

Advocate Barry Madolo, who was chairing the hearing, would rule next week on an application that it should be open to the media.
