Johannesburg - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) could charge controversial senior prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach with fraud and corruption.

This move comes just days after she resigned to join the Democratic Alliance as a parliamentary candidate.

According to the Sunday Independent, a report handed to the National Director of Public Prosecutions Mxolisi Nxasana accuses Breytenbach of soliciting a $1m (R11m) loan from a complainant in a case she was prosecuting; accepting a R6.3m donation from a complainant; incorrectly declaring her business interests and failing to declare personal relationships in several cases.

The report recommends that Breytenbach be disciplined and that charges of conflict of interest, misconduct and corruption be brought against her and that criminal charges be brought against her for fraud and corruption.

NPA spokesperson Nathi Mncube said Breytenbach’s resignation, which effectively kicks in at the end of April, had not yet been accepted.
