Polokwane - Bricks were thrown and a branch member was shot during a general meeting of a Limpopo ANC branch on Saturday.

The incident took place apparently because there were differing opinions on who should be nominated as treasurer after the position was left vacant by the late Education MEC Thembi Nwendamutswu.

Branch member Bigboy Nkuna was shot and injured during a struggle with another member.

Police said the fight happened at Relela in Mapani.

It was alleged that the victim was chasing the armed man before he was shot in the stomach.

Police spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto confirmed a case had been opened, but said no one had been arrested.

Otto said a group of angry ANC members retaliated by torching the house and car of the suspected gunman.

Mopani regional secretary Baskop Makamu told News24 that the region would be meeting with the branch to determine what led to the incident.

“We are going to get a report from the branch and then we will be able to act,” he said

ANC provincial secretary Knocks Seabi said they expected the region to submit a report.

However, he slammed the carrying of guns at ANC meetings, saying members should not go to meetings armed.

“We condemn that," said Seabi.

"We have said that the regional leadership must engage the branch, but as the PEC we will be sending a delegation to the affected families."

He said action would be taken against those who took guns to meetings.

The position for Treasurer was left vacant when Nwendamutswu died in December.
