Bridge: 3 held for attack

Durban - Three men have been arrested for hijacking a woman and throwing her off a bridge in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

"The three men were arrested yesterday [Monday] in different places. They are facing an attempted murder charge and a hijacking charge," said Superintendent Vincent Mdunge.

Kavisha Seevnarain, 26, was thrown off the Umkomaas River Bridge on the N2 south, in Chatsworth, on Friday night.

She fell 60 metres, landed in shallow water and sustained chest, head and spinal injuries that left her immobile and unable to pull herself out.

She nonetheless kept herself afloat for more than four hours until a passer-by heard her cries for help and went to her aid, he said.

Firefighters pulled the woman from the water and placed her on an embankment where paramedics attended to her.

Mdunge said two of her assailants were arrested in Durban and the third in Pinetown. Police were still looking for a fourth man.

Mdunge said the ages of the men arrested were 17, 23 and 26.
