Pietermaritzburg - Kavisha Seevnarain, the Pietermaritzburg woman who was thrown off a bridge during a hijacking, is in a stable condition and will make a full recovery from injuries sustained in the 60m fall.
Speaking from his daughter's hospital bedside, her father, Jeewan Seevnarain, said that she was in good spirits and was being treated by a specialist physician who is confident she will make a speedy recovery.
Kavisha, 26, a teacher at Mowat Park Girls' High in Durban, was hijacked at the weekend and flung off a 60m-high bridge on the N2 freeway near Umkomaas.
Kavisha planned to visit a friend on that fateful night but when she failed to pitch up, her concerned friend called her parents.
A passerby found her lying in the shallow water and called emergency services.
Pelvis shattered pelvis, bones broken
Suffering from a shattered pelvis, broken ribs and hypothermia, Kavisha was airlifted to St Augustine's Hospital where she was placed in the Intensive Care Unit.
Although she was weak and in a lot of pain, Kavisha told her parents what happened during the hijacking.
Her father said that Kavisha was experiencing a shortness of breath and couldn't walk due to the shattered pelvis she sustained during the fall.
Seevnarain said that Kavisha would be immobile until her pelvis healed.
"We have been at her bedside since the incident and she is being really strong. We have chatted about the hijacking," he said.
Seevnarain said Kavisha has started physiotherapy and trauma counselling to deal with the ordeal.
"We are awaiting her haemoglobin tests so we can see if there is any internal bleeding. She has been very brave throughout this incident," he added.
A miracle
He said that her surviving was a miracle, one that the family was very grateful for.
"We are so happy and grateful that she is alive, it could have turned out very differently. We just want to ask people to continue praying for her recovery," he said.
Chatsworth police found Kavisha's car in Umlazi, south of Durban.
Police spokesperson director Phindile Radebe said that four people were taken in for questioning but were released.
"No arrests have been made so far but our members are following up on some positive leads," she said.
