Bridge case on hold for teen

2009-11-25 14:19
Durban - The case against a 16-year-old boy accused of hijacking a woman and throwing her over a bridge was on Wednesday postponed by the Durban Magistrate's Court.

The matter would be heard again on December 9 to give police more time to investigate. The teenager would apply for bail on December 15.

He is accused of robbing Kavisha Seevnarian before throwing her off the Mkomazi River Bridge on November 13. She survived the 60m plunge and was recuperating from injuries including a smashed spine and fractured pelvis.

The teenager's accomplices, Wandile Nsibande, 20, and Sibusiso Dlamini were sentenced last week after they pleaded guilty to charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping. Nsibande was given 25 years, Dlamini 40 years behind bars.

Police are still looking for a fourth suspect.

Members of the boy's family at Wednesday's court proceedings hurled insults at journalists. They said they did not understand why a case involving a small boy would attract so many reporters.
