Plettenberg Bay - Two British citizens, who were on holiday in Plettenberg Bay, have drowned, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Saturday.

The bodies of a 28-year-old man and 26-year-old women were found washed up on Robberg Beach in shallow surf, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

Members of the public alerted NSRI about the bodies.

When rescuers arrived on the beach they performed CPR but after extensive effort both were declared dead.

"It is suspected that they drowned.

"Sea conditions were rough with strong rip-currents in the vicinity," Lambinon said.

Police have opened an inquest docket although no foul play was suspected.

British authorities were helping the family abroad.
