Durban – Eleven of the 12 men accused of being involved in the Brook Street taxi rank shootings have been released on bail.

On Friday, Magistrate Phumlani Bhengu granted the men R10 000 bail each with the exception of Thokozani Sikhakhane, who was held in custody because of a pending murder charge in Johannesburg.

Bail conditions stated that the men could not enter the Brook Street taxi rank, nor interfere with, intimidate or threaten any witnesses or government officials involved in the matter.

They must also report to the Durban Central police station every Friday and inform the investigating officer if they wish to leave the country.

The Zamokuhle Long Distance Taxi Association and Sonke Long Distance Taxi Association have been in a dispute over the route between Port Shepstone and the Brook Street taxi rank in Durban near the Berea Road station.

Three people were killed in the shoot-out at Brook Street on September 16. The 12 accused were arrested and charged shortly afterwards.

The matter was adjourned to January 18 2016 for further investigations.
