Port Elizabeth - The family of Port Elizabeth gospel singer André Steyn, 57, was in shock and mourning after he was allegedly shot by his former wife at his home in Breda Place, Vickingvale, at the weekend.
Ann Steyn, 45, was arrested early on Saturday morning.
She had been a police reservist in the Seaview area for years and until recently worked in the 10111 control room of the Mount Road police station.
According to police spokesperson inspector Hazel Mqala, the tragedy took place shortly before 23:00 on Friday.
"Steyn and his former wife allegedly had a big argument, upon which he fetched a knife."
"His former wife allegedly fetched a gun and shot at him," Mqala said.
She moved back in with him
Steyn and his wife had been divorced for quite a while, but he allowed her to move back in with him.
According to Mqala it could not be determined where Steyn had been shot, as he was covered in blood. He died at the scene.
The couple have three children, namely twins André and Danie, both policemen, and Liesel, who is undergoing training as a nurse as an exchange student in Sweden.
The shocked children didn't want to talk to the media on Sunday. An angry Anton Steyn, the victim's brother, said: "I knew it was going to happen."
He said he had warned his brother against just such an incident less than a week ago. Family members confirmed on Sunday that Steyn's ex-wife suffered from serious depression.
The deceased's sister, Zelda Ferreira, from Hankey, described her brother as a wonderful person. She said she couldn't believe what had happened.
The sad Ferreira supported their mother, Francis van Rooyen, 78, from Witelsbos in Tsitsikamma, on Sunday.
A cousin of the deceased, who didn't want to be named, said the whole family was shocked by the incident.
Steyn, a training manager, was employed by Spoornet for more than 40 years.
Ms Steyn will appear in the magistrate's court in Port Elizabeth on a murder charge on Monday.
