Durban - A brother and sister appeared in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court for attempting to defraud a bank of R8.1 million.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the two were released on bail of R3 000 each.

It is alleged the woman approached the bank seeking a business loan of R15m, claiming that she needed the funding because she had secured a contract from a cellphone network to open a call centre.

Upon verifying the contract, the bank learnt from the cellphone network that they had never awarded her the contract.

Naicker said police were alerted and the bank offered her an R8.1m loan.

She had listed her brother as one of her suppliers.

"Yesterday, both suspects were called in to sign their contract and as soon as they signed the documents members of the Hawks pounced on them and placed them under arrest," said Naicker.
