Johannesburg - Two brothers drowned when they tried to cross a river at Hankey near Uitenhage, police said on Monday.
Superintendent Priscilla Naidu said the two men were swimming across the river on their way home at about 12:00 on Sunday.
She said: "The first man jumped into the water and he was washed away by the strong water current.
"His brother went to contact the police and came back and jumped into the water in an attempt to save his brother."
Naidu said police divers searched the river for several hours on Sunday but the bodies were not found.
"One of the bodies was spotted floating in the river today (Monday) but it has not been retrieved, as the strong water currents make it impossible for anyone to get into the river."
Naidu said police were at the scene and a police helicopter had been assigned to assist in retrieving the body.
She said police were still looking for the second body.
