Johannesburg - West Rand police have arrested eight alleged burglars - three of them women - thought to be behind a spate of recent break-ins in Azaadville, Gauteng police said on Monday.
Inspector Solomon Sibiya said a Kagiso house robbery task team, acting on a tip-off, arrested them at different addresses in Azaadville early on Friday morning. They were all from Swaniesville and were aged between 17 and 25.
The three women were found to have all worked for one of the victims, a wealthy businessman who owned a cellphone shop. They were thought to have provided information about him to their male accomplices.
The businessman was robbed of 10 cellphones on August 20. Sibiya said eight of the stolen cellphones were recovered in the possession of those arrested.
A ninth person was arrested in Azaadville on Saturday when an 84-year-old woman told police he had tried to hijack her in the area the previous day.
