Johannesburg - A decomposed, burnt body of a man has been found in the bushes near Witbank, Mpumalanga police said on Thursday.

Passers-by made the discovery between Verena and Zithabiseni Resort around 17:00 on Wednesday, Warrant Officer Sizwe Gumede said.

The body was found in tall grass with two bullet wounds in the chest.

"It appeared the body had been dragged from the nearby R25 road to the bushes where it was burnt."

A murder docket had been opened.
