Johannesburg - The mother of a 5-year-old disabled boy, who burnt to death in a shack fire in Phelindaba, Sharpeville, has been arrested, Gauteng police said on Monday.

The woman, 25, allegedly left the boy locked in their home on Saturday evening while she went on a drinking spree, Warrant Officer Aubrey Moopeloa said.

On Sunday at 05:00, police were patrolling the area when they saw smoke coming from the shack. On investigation they found the boy's body in the smouldering ruins.

The mother was summoned from a nearby tavern and arrested, Moopeloa said.

Although the woman had not yet been formally charged, she was expected to appear in court soon.

Who leaves any 5 year old at home alone and goes drinking? You need a licence to buy a TV but anyone can have kids!

So so sad that there are people out there crying to have children but cannot, then someone who has a child is so ungrateful. RIP

This is shocking. Alcohol is so destructive and so often leads to tragedy. I think this woman is not fit to be a mother ... sadly for the child, there are no second chances.

She should get life in prison! This happens all too often and there are always a thousand excuses! Stop child grants and you will see birth rate drop. These children are there so "mommy" can have the grant!

I wonder who the schmuck is that is giving thumbs down to the comments. This woman obviously didn't deserve that poor little thing, needless to say it's not the first time she's done this. But I hope it will be the last. She belongs somewhere where she can never have a child again since she can't look after one. RIP little one, you deserved so much better.
