Cape Town – Traffic authorities in Cape Town have impounded a bus carrying rugby players at one of their Easter roadblocks on Friday.

EWN reported that the driver of the bus was arrested for driving a private charter bus, without a valid driver’s licence on the N2 near Somerset West.

The bus was impounded after officials found it not to be roadworthy.

Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said the vehicle was hardly in any condition to be on the road.

“We, firstly, terminated the use of the bus because of the fact that it was unroadworthy.

“And, secondly, we charged the driver for driving without a licence.

“The driver was also arrested.”

Africa added, the driver did not have the compulsory documents needed to travel long distances.

“He was operating public transport without the necessary permits and was on his way to Swellendam apparently with rugby players.”

Traffic official are out in full force this Easter weekend.

Several roadblocks, which will specifically target drunk drivers, have been planned for the next few days.

Metro police chief, Wayne le Roux, said they were taking a no-nonsense approach.

“We’d just like to appeal to motorists - let’s be responsible, make alternative arrangements, especially when going to the seaside and consider all families and all road users on our public roads.”

Gauteng police arrested a 25-year-old man for driving at a speed of 216 km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N4 highway outside Bronkhorstspruit.

The man told officers his mother was sick and he was on his way to assist her.

This, however, could not be confirmed.

The man is due to be released on bail of R1 500 and will appear in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
