Buses, taxis torched near Rustenburg
Rustenburg - Six buses and a number of minibus taxis were set alight during a quarrel between taxi drivers in Marikana, near Rustenburg, North West police said on Wednesday.
Warrant Officer Sam Tselanyane said six buses belonging to the Midbank bus company were set alight on Tuesday morning.
The buses were at the Middlekraal station in the Lonmin area of Wonderkop at the time.
Tselanyane said Tuesday's arson attacks followed taxi violence that erupted in Marikana when members of two taxi associations, one local and one long distance, went on the rampage on Saturday.
It was suspected that the violence started after local taxi operators accused members of the long distance group of ferrying passengers to areas where they were not supposed to go. A fight ensued between the two groups and five taxis were set alight.
The damage in both incidents was estimated at R17.5m.
Tselanyane said cases of public violence and malicious damage to property had been registered. Police were sent to the area and roadblocks had been set up.
