Businessman's R1m bail scrapped, back in jail

2012-03-13 17:53
Pietermaritzburg - The R1m bail of a businessman accused of defrauding the KwaZulu-Natal education department was cancelled on Tuesday.

KwaZulu-Natal High Court Judge Gregory Kruger ordered that Jabulani Zakhele Mabaso be taken into custody.

He failed to appear in court on March 5 for the start of trial.

Mabaso is accused of defrauding the department of R200m by inflated invoices.

His co-accused Pam Bosman-Zulu, the department's former chief financial officer, allegedly authorised the inflated payments in return for kickbacks.

Kruger said Mabaso had used various ruses to delay trial.

Mabaso was expected to make a new application for bail on Thursday.
