Cape Town - The steps above the Cecil John Rhodes statue on UCT's upper campus were packed with bystanders ahead of its removal at 17:00 on Thursday.

There was a palpable buzz as a few hundred University of Cape Town students and members of the public chatted and took photos, while a throng of media stood nearby with video cameras.

Some students sang, clapped their hands and blew a whistle to pass the time.

Two riggers with white hard hats sat on the crane truck parked near the statue, ready to spring to action.

At 17:00, the rigging team was set to lift the bronze statue off its pedestal and whisk it off to an undisclosed location.

Two drones hovered in the air, capturing footage of the statue and activities nearby. It was unclear who was operating the drones.

The University of Cape Town’s council on Wednesday ruled that the statue, the centre of much debate over the last few weeks, must be removed from the institution’s steps.
