C- Max execution chamber to be a museum

2011-11-30 10:06

Pretoria - The country's maximum security prison, C-Max in Pretoria, is standing empty because a museum is being built in its execution chambers, according to a report on Wednesday.

Its 300 prisoners were moved to correctional centres in the Johannesburg area earlier this year, and only expected to move back "home" next March, national correctional services commissioner Tom Moyane said in Parliament.

This was because the execution chambers, which had not been used since the death penalty was abolished since 1996, were being turned into a museum, according to Beeld newspaper.

This execution chamber should be put back into use. We need it to cleanse the country of violent criminals.

      Agreed, mate!

      John - 2011-11-30 11:41

agree they should revamp it but not to be a museum but rather into a full functioning execution chamber with state of the art equipment and should be in daily use for the amount of violent crime in this country

People are killing our kids and raping our women only to be housed and fed by our money and yet they turn it in to a museum. It should come back to full operation.

With all the corruption and lies going around we will never know if it is the REAL thing unless it is regularly put to the test. It will add to that feeling of authenticity if you the visitor knows it still worked well a week or two ago. Put it to the test on those killers about whose guilt there can be no doubt and who deliberately planned their deeds well in advance. There seems to be at least 5 or 6 such convictions in our courts every month. Take for example that woman - can't recall the rubbish's name now - who killed her victim in some cemetery and skinned his face. She was sentenced just a few days ago. She does not belong in this world. So many examples and so few opportunities to rid the world of them. It seems a perfectly operational means will be available. If they are going to spend money to keep it in good and (presumably) working condition, why not use it? It can still serve as a museum as well.

  • Irene - 2011-11-30 11:33

We have enough museums. Put these execution chambers to use!

  • William - 2011-11-30 11:33

Ditto to that!!! Why waste tax payers money looking after scum!!!

  • Andrew - 2011-11-30 11:45

Who would want to visit a prison museum and that a prison that is still in use. Do we not have better ways to spend money? It would have been more suitable to have used this expense for upgrading of hospitals or the like. This museum will in all liklihood cost thousands as the work will carried out by some prison officials buddy.

We need to put it back into use. Immediately! Chemical castration for rapists and death penalty for murderers!

  • Snoopsy - 2011-11-30 13:19

Ah what a pity. Re-Instate it to Full USE!

  • gary.jurgens - 2011-11-30 13:38

The ANC would never do that there would be now one to vote thy all be dead you can vote in jall but not if your dead!

  • jeremy002 - 2011-11-30 13:41

That's silly. As soon as I become president I will re-instate the death penalty (straight after I bulldoze every toll gate in the country flat) and then we will have to undo all that work. Waste of money.

      Maai - 2011-11-30 13:50

Please also destroy every minibus taxi.

      Maai - 2011-11-30 14:46

Oh and do away with COSATU too.

  • JohnnyBGood - 2011-11-30 14:21

Maybe a "working museum" is a better option. With live shows. Broadcast on TV, YEAH !!!

  • Perfume - 2011-11-30 15:46

Put it back into use, enough rapists and murderers wandering around in the country, committing the same crime.

  • Maureen Webster - 2011-11-30 18:58

Perfectly good gallows going to waste, while serial killers and murderous thieves gobble down tax payers money and breathe the air meant for civil society.

  • Matthew - 2012-05-22 14:14

=/ dissapointing.so much for bringing the death penalty back.there goes any hope that crime will eventually be stopped =/
