Cape Town - People who are planning to visit Cape beaches during the festive season should make this a sober decision because sunbathing under the influence definitely will not be allowed.
Anyone caught with liquor on the beach in the festive season faces a fine of up to R500 and the alcohol will be confiscated, said David Erleigh, mayoral committee member for safety and security.
And, officials aplenty will be there to enforce the ban: 954 police, 603 traffic officers, 304 law enforcement officers and 100 additional seasonal workers will be deployed in the Peninsula.
The municipality has budgeted an additional R2m for overtime payment for the officials.
The law enforcers will also patrol the Cape beaches to ensure that alcohol-related incidents, often involving violence, are avoided.
Rudi Wolter, spokesperson for Erleigh, said beaches such as Monwabisi and Muizenberg drew between 80 000 and 100 000 people on sunny days.
