Cape Town - Cape Talk radio reports that a British woman has apparently died in the fire gutting Table Mountain.
The radio station also says that police have arrested a suspected arsonist for questioning about the devastating fire on Table Mountain.
Rescue services fear that other hikers could be trapped on the mountain.
The blaze is growing by leaps and bounds and has jumped Kloofnek Road to the slopes of Lion's Head, where several homes in Tamboerskloof are being evacuated.
It is also sweeping towards the upmarket Atlantic seaboard suburbs of Camps Bay and Fresnaye.
Reports also are coming through that four houses in Higgovale, which abuts on to Table Mountain, are on fire.
Some residents in Oranjezicht also have been advised to leave their homes.
Kloofnek Road, which connects the City Bowl with Camps Bay, has been closed to traffic.
According to weather reports there are no signs that the strong southerly wind, which is driving the fire, is about to abate.
