Cape Town - About 20 000 new credit card style driver's licences will have been processed on the Cape Peninsula and outlying areas during the past week by midnight on Friday, according to the Cape Town unicity.
The city's executive councillor for safety, David Erleigh and city police chief Mark Sangster said in a statement the figure of 20 000 was about 10% of the estimated 200 000 people in the Western Cape who had not yet converted their licences.
A total of 5 913 licences were converted on Thursday.
Erleigh and Sangster applauded the efforts and commitment of their staff and volunteers over the past week.
They said some centres closed down after midnight on Thursday to finalise transactions.
They urged the public to make use of the two-month extension period, announced by acting transport minister Jeff Radebe in Pretoria on Friday, to renew their licences timeously.
Radebe said the extension was decided on because there were "tentative indications that we might slide into a situation of public disorder".
