Cape Town - Minibus taxi driver Jacob Humphreys was released on R20 000 bail in the Blue Downs Magistrate's Court outside Cape Town on Tuesday, SABC radio news reported.

The 55-year-old driver, from Elsiesrivier, faces 10 counts of culpable homicide after 10 school children were killed when their minibus taxi was hit by a train.

Humphreys allegedly jumped a line of cars waiting at the Blackheath level crossing before driving around a lowered boom and into the path of the train.

Nine children died on the scene and a 10th child died in hospital.

The court instructed Humphreys to report to the Kleinvlei police station once a week, and not to make any contact with the families of the deceased or the witnesses.

The case was postponed to December 3.
