Cape Town - More than 200 metered taxi drivers have been trained in Cape Town, the Western Cape transport department said on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Aniela Gella said the driver training was part of an initiative of the department to equip and skill members of the metered taxi industry.
"The training is a vital part of the preparations of South Africa, the Western Cape and the City of Cape Town for the 2010 Football World Cup," she said.
The training would contribute to providing an improved public transport service beyond 2010.
"The skilling of the 285 drivers was customised for them to become 2010 hosts while at the same time being tour guides beyond the football spectacle."
The training module comprised practical skills needed to ensure the safety and comfort of tourists, tour guiding and as business skills.
The four-month programme was approved by the tourism, hospitality and sport education and training authority, (Theta). It was worth approximately R1.5m.
The training holds an NQF4 qualification.
