Cabinet minister Roy Padayachie dies

2012-05-05 07:26

Pretoria - Cabinet minister Roy Padayachie, 62, has died in Ethiopia, government spokesperson Jimmy Manyi confirmed on Saturday.

"The minister died of natural causes," Manyi said.

He had been minister of public service and administration since October 2011.

Padayachie was attending a meeting of the African Peer Review Mechanism in Addis Ababa.

The two-day meeting Padayachie was attending is a high level discussion between ministers and top government officials who report directly to their respective heads of state.

Padayachie was part of the APR focal point select committee.

On the agenda was a discussion on integrating the mechanism into the African Union.

He joined the African National Congress in 1972.

May his soul R.I.P. Condolences to his family.

      Jacobus - 2012-05-05 09:38

Thumbs speaks out in a deafening loud silence....

      frank.hartry - 2012-05-05 09:44

At 62 it is doubtful that he died of natural causes like idiot Manyi says. With ANC staLWART Sicelo who died recently, many people are saying he dies of an AIDS related disease. The ANC is seemingly to ashamed to tell the truth so we will never really know. According to Manyi Sicelo was a man of integrity and honour. Even the DA do not stop praising him. Have we taxpayers and the public protector perhaps been wrong all along?

      John - 2012-05-06 05:12

Wow South Africans have become so cynical that we thumbs down wishing him R.I.P....

WTF! How can you "thumbs down" a considerate and affectionate comment?! Is it due to the use of the word "comrade"?!

  • marumobongani - 2012-05-05 07:40

Ok what was he doing in ethopia?what natural causes are those?

Friederik, eish these 'flies'? Each time you see 'them' you just feel like crushing 'them' I guess? Dying so far from home really is bad. Rest In Peace Minister!! I wish you lived to see the Digital migration of TV that you had pushed for.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-05 09:35

It so sad to read these comments ,re the death of a cabinet member, and the ,thumbs up/down responses from other readers. There is nothing wrong with being ( very ) critical of a government. But the amount of HATRED many show here, is not only disturbing, but SICKENING !!!!

  • Brett - 2012-05-05 07:41

Why are we sending government officials to ethiopia? Just another waste of money.

      mkgatla3 - 2012-05-05 07:57

      Wich planet are u from???????

      Squeegee - 2012-05-05 07:59

So Brett, are you advocating that SA must isolate itself from the world. Go live in North Korea.

      ttshabalala - 2012-05-05 08:07

Brett, you just asked a question that you clearly have no answer to. Instead of finding out why it was necessary for the minister to be in Ethiopia, you are already making an uninformed judgment that it was a waste of money. “You are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled to your informed opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant.” ? Harlan Ellison

      Brett - 2012-05-05 08:10

No I'm advocating that we send our ministers to countries like switzerland or denmark so that they can learn how to improve our country.

      Brett - 2012-05-05 08:37

@Quade please substantiate your ridiculous remarks with facts.

      Lady - 2012-05-05 08:45

May his soul rest in peace @ Brett you are so lame

      Koos - 2012-05-05 08:45

Killed thousands, you are confused or are you talking about you beloved ancESTORS? You should educate yourself about the facts, but then again, if you are educated you will not embrace the incompetant, corrupt ancESTORS.

      Lady - 2012-05-05 09:02

@ Ignorant Koos know the history of a country you live in.You guys just love embarrassing your selves.

      Koos - 2012-05-05 09:11

So, according to your logic thousands are not murdered in the townships anymore? Black on black violence were mot caused by the system. If it was the case why are there still a high amount of black on black violence? If you do the numbers you will realise more people are murdered yearly for the past 15 years than at any time before that. I don't eat marmite. I prefer roast beef or polony.

      Brett - 2012-05-05 09:17

Quade I have not made one reference to race. You have made many you low life racist.

      Quade - 2012-05-05 09:28

Roast beef or polony? U elitist...lol. Peanut butter is still a luxury to the masses. The system that started the rot was apartheid.

      Koos - 2012-05-05 09:32

I work for my money. So, I can buy what I want. Perhaps the masses should ask if they too can have some cake.

      Brett - 2012-05-05 09:35

Quade 30 billion rand went missing last year. That would have bought a lot of peanut butter. And somehow you blame the previous government for this?

      Brett - 2012-05-05 09:39

And Quade, I am far from being an elitisi I work 10 hours a day to make ends meet.

      Quade - 2012-05-05 09:45

Hey Brett. Don't take it personal but we both know that u r a racist. I am sure u wish u could use an ox wagon an the streets.

      Quade - 2012-05-05 09:58

Ok. Enough chatting. It was great exercising my right to freedom of expression with you \gentlemen\. I hope u enjoy the rugby, biltong and braai. What a great country. We need the likes of you to make it better.

      Koos - 2012-05-05 10:12

Thanks for the debate. The sky is the limit! :)

      Jacqui - 2012-05-05 10:47

      Quade, killed thousands!!!! Please elaborate.

      Jacqui - 2012-05-05 10:50

Lady, you are not doing badly in the embarrassing yourself department either.

      Ask - 2012-05-05 16:07

@Brett - Read slowly ... The minister was on diplomatic mission... It would be a waste of money to send him to Switzerland, because we already know how they operate... they hide Nazi billions and stolen money from Holocaust victims, including NP stolen money. SA will NOT get another white el Presidente; so live with it... I'm not an ANC supporter; but RIP comrade... you will be missed.

      Jerry - 2012-05-05 18:37

      Brett, are you for real?

      Christopher - 2012-05-05 10:22

Padayache would've changed a lot in his ministry during his tenure,my condolences to his family. His role in the struggle was somewhat indesputable, unlike that of Shiceka who enjoyed a life of crass materialism at the expense of taxpayer's money. The latter deserved to die not the former.

  • Ken - 2012-05-05 09:16

Am a white DA supporter and don't know what Roy's death has to do with ANC. Anyone in the IT world knows that he was a good intelligent man.He was appointed Minister of Communications for a short period and everyone was happy (because of his knowledge)including opposition parties. It's hard to believe but there are a few good people in the ANC. Seems most of you have a problem that he was Indian.

      Lady - 2012-05-05 09:23

      @ Ken well said

      Hat3d - 2012-05-05 09:43

Agreed, he did a lot of for the communications sector when he served as minister there, many were sad to see him replaced. I'm afraid blind hatred is getting the most out of many...

      Jacqui - 2012-05-05 10:58

Ken, you are right, we do forget that there are a FEW good people in the ANC. They are snowed under by those who make a mockery out of governing this country.

      Ken - 2012-05-05 12:32

Bit like Christians who don't like Jews. What irony.

      Raj - 2012-05-05 18:01

I am an ANC office bearer and proud of your comments. This country can go a long way in the right direction with people like you.

  • esethu3 - 2012-05-05 09:19

News24 should really monitor this situation here, people are so Racist and they are not hiding it. To most white people here on News24, everything associated with the ANC is bad. MR SICELO SHICEKA died, comments were made and they were heartless... if you made a comment RIP u got many dislikes... I tried to understand but still..' And now, I DONT UNDERSTAND,I dont even want to try to UNDERSTAND. RIP, MAY YOUR FAMILY FIND COMFORT AT THIS TIME.

      frank.hartry - 2012-05-05 11:39

lETS BE PERFECTLY HONEST HERE. THE LATE ANC STALWART SHICEKA WAS PROVEN TO HAVE STOLEN MILLIONS OF RANDS OF TAXPAYERS MONEY SOME OF WHICH WAS USED TO VISIT HIS DRUG MULE GIRL FRIEND LANGUISHING IN A SWISS JAIL. HE NEVER HAD THE DECENCY TO PAY BACK THE STOLEN MONEY AND NOW ZUMA HAS GRANTED HIM A SPECIAL STATE FUNERAL WHICH WILL ALSO COST TAXPAYERS MILLIONS IN RANDS. NOTIABLY ONLY ANC POLITICIANS RECEIVE THESE SPECIAL FUNERALS AND NOT THE NORMAL HONEST SOUTH AFRICANS WHO DESERVE THEM. NO WONDER SOME OF THE COMMENTS EXPRESS ANGER. BLAME THE CORRUPT ANC.

      Simthandile Mpondo - 2012-05-06 08:14

How much money did the National Party pay back? That I would luv to know.

  • howard.komati - 2012-05-05 09:20

He was one of the Comrades who fought for the Liberation of blacks in SA. I dnt recall reading negative things abt him. He was a true Cadre. May his soul rest in peace Qawe la maqawe.

      frank.hartry - 2012-05-05 10:13

Apparently he was the only honest ANC meember of parliment and cabinet minister that South Africa has had for the last twenty years. The only ANC member that was not busy looting the state coffers. That says something. Zuma only grants special state funerals to ANC politicians but this man obviously deserves that recognition for being the only honest one amongst this ANC den of thieves. RIP

      Kevin - 2012-05-05 18:38

Frank.hartry is wrong, the were plenty of corrupt and incompetent Cabinet Ministers during the NP government era. Just as there are a few competent honest cabinet ministers in the present Government. The ratio of competent to incompetent hasn,t changed much.

  • Hudayfah - 2012-05-05 09:22

Come on peeps, give the guy a break. Rest in peace man

  • frank.hartry - 2012-05-05 09:35

RIP PADAYACHIE. Most of these politicians in South Africa will die of obesity in the months and years ahead. From Zuma down they do not seem to stop stuffing themselves in a continue orgy of celebrations. We see them in parliment almost taking up two seats because they are too fat and greedy. They eat cake worth thousands of rands whilst millions of people are starving. They unfortunately will die off like flies unless they curb their greedy appetites.

What kind of God punishes people by killing them, no matter what anc leaders have done to the nation lets us not say when they pass away that god is dealing with them because even popes and nuns die too but they have done good deeds on earth. for the sake of respect lets leave political views aside when a politician dies even how unjust they where because its becoming a bad habit in our nation it all started when manto died the way it goes some people will do it when mandela passes away.

      Aubrey - 2012-05-05 11:15
