Caged bear rips open girl's arm

2012-04-20 10:10

Bloemfontein - A 16-year-old girl was injured by a bear during an outing with a church group to a game farm in Hoopstad.

Volksblad reported that Charina van der Watt, 16, had to get more than 40 stitches to her left arm after it was ripped open by an Asian black bear last weekend. She was apparently in a lot of pain and nauseous.

The girl’s mother said she was shocked to hear that her daughter had been attacked by a bear. She thought the children were going fishing.

Reverend Chris Erasmus, who accompanied the children, said the children were taken to the farm of well-known game farmer Shorty Durand. There are also lions and tigers on the farm.

Erasmus said Charina had apparently stood with her back to the cage containing the bear. It stuck out its claw and the girl got a fright. As she jerked away, her arm was hit by the bear claw.

Erasmus said the girl was not seriously injured but her mother said she was worried about her as the wound had become infected.

    Wild animals are just that...WILD.

If I was a bear stuck in a cage I would probably do the same! As stated by @Bloodbane-there should be a barrier! When will people learn that wild animals should be left alone and not forced to be there for our entertainment and financial gain!!!!

Could not agree more! Bears are not even indigenous to SA. Animals belong in the wild - if they get out of hand and hurt someone it's because the animals should not even be there. I know this is a generalization - John Varty's recent mishap occurred with an animal in a special breeding programme - so there are exceptions. Animals should be left in their natural habitat.

Never turn your back on any wild animals or the Ex.

News24 continues to prove how poor their reporting skills are.... "Caged bear rips open girl's arm" That's the title of the article, while the piece ends with ".....girl was not seriously injured but her mother said she was worried about her as the wound had become infected." So the bear ripped opened her arm, but she was not seriously injured and it's just a little wound? Confused...

it also sounds like the bear didnt actually attack her either like the headline makes out. terrible.

Tiny wound. I've seen worse shaving accidents.

The Reverend must pay more attention. He must also inform the Parents what exactly is going on, for sure. I am sure there is signage advising visitors about leaning against fences. OR, This is an ANC Bear creating issues.

      Inja - 2012-04-20 10:40

The ANC must take full blame for this

  • Inja - 2012-04-20 10:39

Bring back the death penalty, hang the parents

  • Zola - 2012-04-20 10:40

Am I the only person thinking that a 16year old should have known better than to be too close to the cage???? She is SIXTEEN!!!!! Anyway, the cages should have barrier limiting the distance to the cage for our curious little people...

      Peter-Peter - 2012-04-20 10:56

She had God on her side...so....why worry?....right?

  • Chumscrubber1 - 2012-04-20 10:44

Game farmer? Sounds more like Zoo keeper to me. Game farms don't have animals in cages. I wonder what terrible crime the bear committed in order to earn its life imprisonment?

I remember years ago I stopped at a restaurant in Vietnam. To the rear of the restaurant there was a small Asian black bear in a cage. It made me sad then and makes me sad now when I remember that incident. People who run these farms with exotic animals like bears, tigers, birds etc should be closed down. Purely for the entertainment of tourists!!! I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing that any animal is in a cage. Lets put the owner in a cage for a few years and have people come and poke and prod at him, and see how he feels. Child should have been supervised properly anyway, regardless of the moral issue of this being totally wrong.

      Shirley - 2012-04-20 11:00

Agree 100%. This saddest part is these animals are miserable most of their lives!

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-04-20 12:41

They say its educational ... ja right, nothing to do with making a buck then? Plenty of educational stuff on television, maybe in the 1800's it could have been condoned, but in this era technology does more than enough in terms of educating us about these wild creatures. Agree, a very sad and unneccessary situation.

Why do human beings cage animals? Are Zoos still relevant in this day and age. Are there no better methods than caging? The paradox of animal lovers. SMH.

  • Zimbobwe - 2012-04-20 11:01

Wild animals will remain wild even when caged. Off topic I was checking the synonyms of wild and for papa's sake I found some interesting words. Wild = Native, Barbaric, Indigenous, Untouched(virgin)... Now I know why some people call us wild animals!!!

      Mike - 2012-04-20 11:13

Are you admitting to being a virgin? lmao

  • Stephanie - 2012-04-20 12:19

Look at the cage this bear is being kept in, in the first place! This game farmer is obviously incredibly stupid to even be keeping wild animals in these conditions and then allowing kids to stand next to the cages. Good grief people, what happened to a little common sense and some compassion

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-04-20 12:42

Not a game farmer, an animal collector more like...

  • Jane - 2012-04-20 13:03

Animals being kept in cages, I can't imagine a worse life, so unfair to these animals. I realise that alot of animals sometimes can not be released into the wild for whatever reasons but a life of torment in a cage? Why not in an enclosure which atleast has trees and grass. I went to Tygerberg Zoo last year and wanted to cry when I saw those small enclosures the 2 chimps were being housed in. No grass and not a single leaf insight, only a concrete floor and nothing to amuse them, heartbreaking.

  • Tanja - 2012-04-20 14:55

good, coz wild animals should not be kept in cages

  • Tanja - 2012-04-20 14:55

Good, wild animals should not be kept in cages....

  • Bibi - 2012-04-20 16:22

Honestly, I feel for the bear. An Asian bear in an enclosure in Hoopstad!!!
