Cape Town - A “delightful” calf has joined a farmyard of stray animals at the SPCA in Cape Town after one of its jersey cows gave birth at the weekend, the organisation said on Tuesday.

The calf entered the world quietly during the night and the staff did not get a chance to witness his birth, said Cape of Good Hope SPCA spokesperson Wanika Davids.

His mother is quite protective and territorial, she said.

“The mother cow was brought in on July 1 and was found trespassing on a farm in Eerste River. She was brought in with five other cows.

“The mom is in fair condition and we are waiting to get word from an owner; otherwise she and her calf will go up for adoption.”

The SPCA in Grassy Park acts as the city’s pound facility and owners are given 30 days to claim their animals before they are put up for adoption. Until then they are given food, medication and a place to sleep.

The farmyard now has 18 cows, as well as horses and donkeys.

Davids said the SPCA's doors are always open and they will never turn away an animal.
