Call for end to killing of cops

2012-04-25 11:00

Johannesburg - The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) on Wednesday called for an end to the killing of law enforcers.

"We believe that police, correctional and traffic officers should discharge their duties without any fear of intimidation by hardened criminals who are roaming the streets," said deputy general secretary Lebogang Phepheng.

Phepeng was reacting to the death of two traffic officers in Johannesburg.

He said the union strongly condemned the killing of a traffic officer in Hillbrow, Johannesburg while on duty, allegedly by a taxi driver who disregarded the instruction to stop.

"The law must take its course to protect the law-abiding citizens from these barbaric incidents."

The second officer was gunned down on Tuesday, in Pimville, Soweto while he was on his way to work.

He said the union would like to encourage all South Africans to actively participate in the fight against crime in order for the country to make inroads with its crime combating initiatives.

"Communities must unite and work together with the police to blow the whistle on criminal activities. In that way, the few rotten elements that are terrorising our communities will be exposed."

Too many police is involved in crime. Not always think innocent police, maybe his hijack buddies shoot him.

      rbphiri - 2012-04-25 11:36

True. I feel sorry for the victim's family, but his death will inevitably lead to a rogue police force, where certain situations will lead to extensive police brutality on innocent citizens in retaliation of the victim, so basically during routine stops they will start viewing people as potential murderers. I do really feel sad for law enforcers who are killed in the line of duty, true law enforcers who have no affiliation with criminals what so ever earn my respect, but those with ties to criminals, i say good riddance. Hopefully his death will also prompt government to start taking the level of crime in the country seriously, by issuing lengthier prison sentences or perhaps reinstating the death penalty.

      Zip - 2012-04-25 12:22

they should be killed. it is because of their uselessness that we have this crime epidemic.

      Ian - 2012-04-25 13:34

Can we also have a call to stop killing farmers? And innocent taxpayers? And can we have a call for cops and vip security to stop killing innocent people?

      Dikeledi - 2012-04-25 15:50

The 1st thing u 4get is b4 he's an officer his a brother father uncle and some1 2 somebody. His children have lost a father and south africans r 2 ignorant they hav 4gotten that. Stop treating police as if they r not human beings idiots.

  • Andile - 2012-04-25 11:07

POPCRU should issue another statement and the next article should read: \Call for end of cops killing their partners and comitting suicide\

  • E=MC2 - 2012-04-25 11:08

Fewer criminals, fewer chances of police being killed...

      rbphiri - 2012-04-25 11:40

It's simple mathematics but our judicial system loves dishing out light sentences. Like hmmmm he has prior murder convictions, but i think this man won't kill for the 50th time, let's give him a chance by making him enter a rehabilitation programme, i think killing 49 people is just a phase his going through, he will probably out grow that phase.

  • Stormkaap - 2012-04-25 11:08

What a stupid bunch of people... Do your job curbing crime then this nonsense of police killings will be minimised

      Michael - 2012-04-25 11:41

storm'domkop' You are dumb. Wasn't the traffic cop who was killed inspecting an unroadworthy taxi doing his job. It sometimes pisses me off reading negative comments from people like you in this forum. I can just sense bitter looser with no option but to crush anything on its way.

      rbphiri - 2012-04-25 11:42

They busy doing their job by grazing in greener pastures of junk food outlets while their fellow staff members are killed.

  • peter.norma - 2012-04-25 11:08

I absolutely agree with the sentiments, but what an absolute load of drivel, as if saying it will make it happen. What is needed is an automatic death sentence for the murder of any law enforcement officer.

      Fussed - 2012-04-25 11:22

Ye right might as well call for gov to stop coruption, call for fuel to drop in price, call for a gov that dosent lie to us. It's just call away. Who is bullsh@$#ing who here.

      seanpresherhughes_1 - 2012-04-25 12:20

If I remember, this used to the case Peter! I agree with you!

  • Herman - 2012-04-25 11:08

What is the difference between killing cops and killing farmers? Both are serving the public, yet govt keeps quit about farm murders. Does it suits them if farmers are murdered?

      JJ - 2012-04-25 11:10

I don't think we should differentiate between any citizens...stop murders all together!!

      Rob - 2012-04-25 11:18

Herman....Well you know why " they " dont call for a killing of farmers ! Most of our population really dont appear to care about farmers & judging by the " sympathetic comments " that appear on these forums by members of the peace loving, ubuntu filled majority, when farm killings are reported, it appears as if they condone it.

      Paul - 2012-04-25 13:41

Well said JJ, stop all this shooting, ALLTOGETHER!!!! More people are being killed in SA than Afghanistan!!

  • justin.massyn - 2012-04-25 11:13

Well frankly, if the courts would do their job and keep these "hardened criminals" off the streets, we would already be one step ahead. Then, we are requested to assist the police force in doing their job's..... is there a tax break associated to this?? I do have a job thanks, and i pay for you to do yours, get on with it, or become a potential victim like me that tries his level best to look after and protect my family and well being in the absence of a "real" police force....

      moloi.tubatsi - 2012-04-25 11:19

Dude What a clueless and uninformed comment

      seanpresherhughes_1 - 2012-04-25 12:25

It is not only the judges that issue light sentences, but the parole board that reduces their time and they are released to complete the remainder of their sentence in the community, because the prisons are about 30% overfull (speak under correction here, but it was the last figure I heard). I used to be a warder many moons ago, I know how this works!

  • Martin - 2012-04-25 11:18

i think the police have the wrong idea of what hardened criminals are...maybe if cops had some integrity, and stopped being the hardened criminals themselves, why are jmpd envolved in atm bombings etc.. perhaps then they wont have to be silenced by their kind who they have dirt on. i personally dont care, cops have never helped me, i wont help them. eye for an eye. most police are criminals, who are unfit to protect the community or carry firearms, i fear for my money and my life when police are around.

      Martin - 2012-04-25 11:33

police are the enemy of hardened criminals, they wont take your crap lying down, if they can kill you then they rule, and vice versa. grow up and step up to the plate.

  • Kala - 2012-04-25 11:18

Here's my call, and Im sure I can say it on behalf of everyone. "We, the citizens of SA call upon SAPS to curb the killing of us citizens". If SAPS was doing a half decent job there would be less hardened criminals on the street trying to kill us all.

  • justin.massyn - 2012-04-25 11:30

@ moloi Bud, it appears the collective tax funded organizations' lack of competence and true understanding of real service delivery is beyond them. It's the wonderful circle of life playing out, just a pity a small portion have to fund it.

  • kevin.moreland2 - 2012-04-25 11:38

    police stop murdering innocent victims!!

  • Emil - 2012-04-25 11:39

Killing of anybody should be condemned. If however our Police are working in fear of hardened criminals we must be totaly out of controll??

  • winston.mullany - 2012-04-25 11:40

As if the criminals are REALLY listening!!!

      Nikki Bodenstein - 2012-04-27 01:52

Half the criminals are the POLICE!

  • john.ncala - 2012-04-25 11:43

POPCRU must also comment when innocent people are bitten by police on tarvens which have licence's and must also comment when police kills his family and shoots him self over the past month till to date how many policeman have killed their patners also comment when police rob the innocent people and comment when a true dad did their job in five days and got his daughters killers to all the families who lost their lov es ones on the line of duty may god be with you meaning those who do their job

      Deon - 2012-04-25 11:52

You probably meant beaten, or else the police was hungry? Police violence is a problem in SA, luckilly more and more people use CCTV to catch them in the act.

  • Flavi - 2012-04-25 11:47

When will these people see the light.Todays police and cops are not respected at all by the public because they themselves disrespect the law. They are corrupt, lazy, incompetent and uneducated. It is the goverment officials whom have brought this upon our so called law enforcement agencies because need i say, just look at the top of these structures and two names come to mind Jackie Selebe and Bheki Cele. Its a joke people.

      Nikki Bodenstein - 2012-04-27 01:51

So true! I wouldn't trust them with my life!

  • Andrew - 2012-04-25 11:48

Quite correct but lets first start with the cops not killing innocent people they are supposed to defend!!!!!

  • Phumi - 2012-04-25 11:51

All those who are against the 'shoot to kill' and 'skiet n doner' policy should take the blame for this increase in police killings! These so called neo-liberals want us to give our policy water guns and not fight fire with fire!

  • Jacques - 2012-04-25 11:56

What about an end to the daily murder of normal citizens

  • Maylene - 2012-04-25 11:57

Well they getting away with murder in this country it's only getting worse, BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY!!!

  • mkansig - 2012-04-25 12:03

I the matter of killing cops on there way to work they don't have cars they use train nd taxi to go to work , those criminal attact them nd take there life nd guns , they must collect them @ there place nd drop them later like before .

  • Roy - 2012-04-25 12:05

Not that I condone the killing of policemen and wish that anyone that does this receives the harshest sentence, but if one looks at what happens to people who are in the custody of the police and the way they are treated,or the way certain policemen abuse their positions and uniforms and are not trusted by the public,is it any wonder that they are killed.

  • seanpresherhughes_1 - 2012-04-25 12:08

Easier said than done, I'm afraid. You phone the police and they don't pitch up at all in an emergency, or they tell you that thay don't have a van to respond, they are all out!?

      Nikki Bodenstein - 2012-04-27 01:50

Exactly! Useless bunch! Scorpions need to come back and sort everyone out! Lol

  • seanpresherhughes_1 - 2012-04-25 12:15

JHB is full of CCTV cameras, surely the criminal could be identified and arrested within minutes! (I'm speaking under correction here - not sure if the murderer was caught and arrested in this incident) The CCTV system that the Metro has in place in JHB CBD should be able to pick up any criminal activity, it cost millions to install,' wonder how effective it has been so far because with this system in place there should be virtually no crime at all in JHB!!!

      justin.massyn - 2012-04-25 16:34

probably stopped working a few months after it was installed, or neglected and not maintained, and the service provider has already closed his company and opened a new one, more than likely the same guys who installed the e-toll. Just shooting the breeze :-)

  • John - 2012-04-25 12:26

Screw police killings as this is only a small problem. Farm Killings are a much bigger concern for this country and every possible thing should be done to stop this!!!

  • Keith - 2012-04-25 12:29

In my opinion criminals don't take Police seriously in this country and think the police are themselves soft targets. If the Police did what was expected of them and didn't drop the ball all the time they would be respected by the public and feared by criminals.Criminals have the confidence to know that they won't get caught and if they do they will be out on bail easily and cheaply. Before you all start saying "what about the good cops?" you are only as strong as your weakest link and unfortunately all the bad apples make the whole force look bad. My dealings with most police officers or JMPD have seldom been good, they have been arrogant, aggressive and unhelpful in most cases. I must say that reservists have been the complete opposite. I don't think many of the police Officers in this county do their job out of passion or a calling to them it is a job and to earn a salary. Police Officers are Servants of the public but they don't serve us. Now I feel this way imagine what the crooks and criminals feel like?

  • anthro45 - 2012-04-25 13:14

Can you believe it. The police are begging criminals not to be criminals. Pathetic. Start doing your job and arrest the criminals instead of seeing what you can make out of a bribe.

  • Nikki Bodenstein - 2012-04-27 01:49

Maybe the 27400 incompetent policeman are the ones getting killed?
