Cape Town - If you own a Nokia cellphone, make sure you don't have a BL-5C battery - which is being recalled after reports of overheating.
Cellphone maker Nokia has issued a global alert, warning that up to 46 million of its batteries could, in rare cases, overheat due to a short-circuit while being charged.
Tania Steenkamp, a spokesperson for Nokia, has told News24 they don't know how many of the faulty batteries are circulating in South Africa.
She said customers who would like to check if their BL-5C battery is subject to the advisory should visit the website www.nokia.com/batteryreplacement or contact their local Nokia call centre on 086 11 66 542.
She said any Nokia consumer who is currently using a Nokia product containing the faulty battery will receive a replacement battery free of charge.
In earlier reports, Nokia said no serious injuries or property damage has occurred from the defective batteries.
Japanese manufacturer Matsushita Electric Industrial reportedly made 46 million of the BL-5C batteries for Nokia between December 2005 and November 2006.
According to the Nokia.com website, the BL-5C batteries were used with the following Nokia models or separately as accessories:
