Calls for education minister's head

2012-07-01 14:37

Johannesburg - Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga could face the axe over the bungled textbook delivery to Limpopo schools, according to media reports on Sunday.

At its ANC policy conference last week, the ANC agreed action should be taken on under-performing civil servants, the Sunday Independent reported.

"If one of us is under-performing as a public servant, regardless of what level we are at, then we need to act," ANC treasurer general Mathews Phosa told the paper.

Delegates had reportedly called for Motshekga's head.

"They went for the minister viciously. They savaged her. They said we must not have this thing happening," Phosa said.

Abusing position

They agreed "no one can be protected any longer by the government or by their position", Phosa was quoted as saying.

He could not say whether Motshekga would be fired.

Both Motshekga and the presidency were informed of problems with the tender for delivering textbooks to Limpopo, which was won by EduSolutions, City Press reported.

In January last year, Solly Tshitangano, former acting chief financial officer for the Limpopo education department, approached the presidency with his concern over the tender. An official responded months later saying his information was receiving their attention.

In June last year, Tshitangano sent Motshekga's office detailed evidence of the problems with EduSolutions. The presidency confirmed to City Press it had received Tshitangano's dossier.

Investigation

It referred the matter to Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale's office for investigation in September last year.

EduSolutions insisted to the paper its contract for textbook delivery was valid. It was pursuing litigation against the government for money owed to it following the cancelled contract, City Press reported.

However, according to an opinion obtained by the State from advocate Pat Ellis in January, the contract was "neither fair, equitable, transparent, competitive nor cost effective".

The contract was open to constitutional challenge as it did not comply with public finance management laws.

In an interview on Talk Radio 702 this week Motshekga denied knowing Tshitangano. Rapport newspaper on Sunday however cited an e-mail, dated 5 July 5 2011, in which Motshekga's office thanks him for his evidence and says the matter is "receiving attention".

Oh, she'll just be moved to an ambassadorial post somewhere. Don't worry, Angie, you're salary is safe.

  • nozukol - 2012-07-01 14:57

Ministers should be hands on and do follow up. How can you change curriculum and no resources.

  • elmarie.viljoen.7 - 2012-07-01 15:03

They are more protected than our Rhino's - fire the lot of them... Agree with Glyn - Vote DA and get rid of incompetence!!! Bunch of useless overpaid idiots!!!

  • herbert.plessis - 2012-07-01 15:05

If this happened in Europe, or any other First world Country, the minister would have fallen on her sword. Can we really allow such waste in a country that does not have the money? She should go, far, far way. How would she feel if her kids got the same treatment. No wait, they were probably in private schools. I listened to Rob Davies on Friday, what a drivel. Why van we not get a competent cabinet, based on merit and achievement. Not cadre deployment, notboetie boetie politics, not inept and intellectually deficient persons. Vote DA.

  • kathleen.whiteley.7 - 2012-07-01 15:07

If this was business in the real world, and not the ANC fantasy world, she would have been fired immediately and prevented from practising in a similar field.

  • Lindelwa - 2012-07-01 15:12

She must go now!! together with EduSolutions and all the corrupt and incompetent civil servants in the Education department. We can't just sit and watch whilst the future of our kids is being destroyed to secure votes for the ANC. We must not stop putting the pressure, like we did with Bheki Cele, Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde, Mdluli, etc!!

  • prakash.singh.169 - 2012-07-01 15:17

IT IS PRETTY OBVIOUS THE MINISTER HAS GOT A HAND IN THE TENDER. ANC NO RESPECT FOR THE LAW. NO RESPECT FOR THE VOTERS THAT PUT THEM THERE. MESSAGE TO ALL THE LEARNERS OF TODAY AND FUTURE VOTERS, VOTE DA FOR A BETTER LIFE FOR ALL.

  • Tiyani - 2012-07-01 15:24

Oh no, the decision would be up to Zuma. Am not looking forward to her removal process but i want her out.

  • Erna - 2012-07-01 15:24

She should never have been made minister of basic education in the first place. Its not as if she was an adequate MEC of education!

  • vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-07-01 15:32

The sad thing is that in this province the ANC won well over 80% of the vote. So these people are true supporters. They clearly love and live for the ANC. Are the ANC so obsessed with recruiting more voters that they are neglecting their loyal supporters?

      tshandazenzile - 2012-07-01 17:35

Same as in the eastern cape, the anc is well supported, but keeps on failing their loyal supporters.

      hugh.olphart - 2012-07-03 15:53

and they are too stupid to fire them and get in a new government. They deserve what the get. I just feel sorry for the kids, they have to live with the government their parents chose.

  • Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-07-01 15:34

ANC is not worried about education, most of them bought theirs anyway. And, the less educated the nation, the more votes for them!!!

  • di.hingley - 2012-07-01 15:35

She took away the rights of our children.....What more must our children lose because of her and others like her? FIRE HER!!!!!!!!!

  • Ntobane Setabola - 2012-07-01 15:37

Let see if Zuma will do as he preaches. This case doesn't need investigations and suspensions, delivery delays and lack of honesty are full evidence.\r\nHer having taken down her pants for Zuma is gona shield her, just watch!

  • lynette.viviers.7 - 2012-07-01 15:41

same minister that was fired by Mbeki.

  • karimesaks - 2012-07-01 15:50

Really? I think that if there is anybody to be fired it is the dimwit numbskull Cassel Mathale and his crew! Also all the parliamentarians who have so-called constituencies in Limpopo. They should all go!!

  • Stewart Croucamp - 2012-07-01 15:52

She should be stoned by the children she betrayed!

  • charnelle.bester - 2012-07-01 16:15

Get rid of her, she is just another oxygen thief hired by the rest of the oxygen thieves!

  • claire.canter - 2012-07-01 16:23

If government is going to fire all corrupt and under performing officials, they are going to have a lot of places to fill. When are us tax payers going to stand together and demand a properly functioning government? There is serious decay in almost every government run function, from town council to education to transport, to the policing. We are not being protected and treated fairly as working individuals, we are being exploited as a source of income to patch up the coffers that are being bled dry due to bad management.

      koos.meyer.52 - 2012-07-01 19:01

And they want more state intervention in the Economy... so they can eff that up to. Not a coincidence that the ANC keep the masses stupid with their worse than Bantu Education 2012 system.

  • elkita.robbertse - 2012-07-01 16:31

Angie ,with that face i don't know how you got the job as minister. But then, the face is not the main issue for Zuma.....

  • antin.herinck - 2012-07-01 16:31

They want her head? Well, they can have it. Good luck with that very ugly thing then.

  • mawetu.janda - 2012-07-01 16:51

I'm wondering if her kids attend public schools she poorly run. They tend to send their's to expensive overseas private schools.

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-07-01 17:13

Yeah Yeah I certainly agree, miss arrogance was not doing her job she was caught out. Time to throw her off the gravy train, lies and all. She was not following up as she should have been doing, she was relying on other people, in her position, she should know better. You dont send a boy on a mans errand. She has disgraced herself and damaged a generations education. If she was not caught out suppose the whole year would have passed and nothing would have been said.

  • daan.phalaborwa - 2012-07-01 18:04

So what. Fire her, and then appoint her in another possition where she can carry on causing crap? And give her a huge golden handshake, and a production bonus two.

      shaylene.stenger - 2012-07-01 18:41

Snap! U took the words right outta my mouth

  • Tommo - 2012-07-01 18:32

And what will we do with the head of the honourable lady?

  • rob.tubbs.39 - 2012-07-01 18:38

Fire her, but not before paying her a multi-million Rand 'severence' package..

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-07-01 18:44

The will go to the ends of the earth to protect each other, I bet you she has her hand in zuma's pocket, so he is really pushed, will just rotate her. She will get a highter position with more money so she can bugger that up to, Zuma has had his day, time for him to take a long holiday in the land of nod.

      koos.meyer.52 - 2012-07-01 19:02

Do you think Zuma is banging her?

  • koos.meyer.52 - 2012-07-01 18:56

It's called Cadre Deployment! Stick a Comrade, any Comrade in any position so we can control every element of SA society, so what if they F Up, just give them a Golden Handshake and redeploy them elsewhere, ANC wisdom at it's best. And they want to run the banks and mines, ha ha ha ha... imagine, it would take 6 months to open a bank account.

  • sizwe.bwana - 2012-07-01 18:56

If this was China she would actually lose her head

      koos.meyer.52 - 2012-07-01 19:03

Yip, if only. Zuma had 2 heads to lose...

  • shaylene.stenger - 2012-07-01 19:02

Aaah don't worry Minister, if they do sack u, u will probably be moved to another department like Mr Cele or you will still receive a salary from the anc.... Seriously ....smh

And you should be shot for treason for using the old flag as an avatar... No matter the good intentions you portray.....you know full well the hatred it instills in people....Grrrrrr!!!

  • Tarone.Net - 2012-07-01 19:13

Unfortunately she may be suspended for years with full pay pending investination on a matter that does not evening require to further waste state resources with stupid investigation, The ANC has convinced me beyond reasonable doubts not give them my vote. Viva any other organisation viva!!!!!!

  • Twolips - 2012-07-01 19:17

Fire incompetent comrades, starting with your president, Mr Phosa.

  • khayalethu.mgoqi - 2012-07-01 22:01

education is essential on our country so its must be ministered by a compitance and intergrity so an incompitant must be boot out before it rotten the whole department, so she must be fired with an immediately effect.

  • richard.amblersmith - 2012-07-02 10:17

This should be treated as a national tradgedy, but no Angie is at a R40 mill bash. These youth are the future of our country. This illustrates the priorities of the ANCYL,NYDA,ANCWL. They are all pretty silent as there is nothing in it for their back pockets?

  • Dane - 2012-07-02 10:20

I see another Zuma cabinet reshuffle........coming soon! Watch this space.

  • Christopher - 2012-07-02 10:20

strange the ANCYL hasnt done some thing about this. With who they are and what they stand for, shouldnt the be fighting for the youth not getting these books? This is so terrible! Education is the most important service and should be viewed as a basic human right! Well done to the ANC you not only put another unqualified person into a position that they cannot handle, but also have impacted the effected youths lives in such a terrible way!

  • Gerald - 2012-07-02 15:15

Dear JZ. Start chewing your arm off buddy, it looks like this ape is going to perform some special favours to keep her job

  • petrus.fortuin - 2012-07-02 16:27

What happened to General Cele. Fired whilst he was performing in his job. Do we need to debate what must happened? Fear is stopping action to be taken. The Minister is President of the ANCWL. Voting power instead of equal and fair education is more important. When Malema did the same to Thabo Mbeki, he was applauded, now doing the same thing he is kicked out. Like a chappie bubblegum chewed until sweetness is up and then spit out.

  • rob.tubbs.39 - 2012-07-02 17:36

Get on with it and face the inevitable - she is going to be fired....... Stop wasting time and employ a 'competent' in the Department.... The future of the country is at stake here...
