Calm returns to township after protest

2012-05-25 13:41
Johannesburg - The Kwa-Thema informal settlement in Ekurhuleni was calm on Friday morning following three days of service delivery protests, police said.

"Today, nothing has been reported," Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

"We have officers in the area who are monitoring the situation."

Twenty people were arrested on Thursday evening and would appear in the Kwa-Thema Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of house-breaking and theft.

The protest started on Wednesday when residents marched to the community service centre to air their grievances. They damaged the fence and broke windows before police intervened, Dlamini said.

Officers also prevented the crowd from damaging a councillor's house and advised foreigners who owned shops to remove their stock.

"No shops were damaged and no one was injured in the process."

On Wednesday, 25 people were arrested for illegal gathering. When they appeared in court on Thursday the charges were dropped and they were released.
