Cape Town - A candle was the cause of the massive fire that wreaked havoc at Mandela informal settlement in Hout Bay on Sunday, killing one man, disaster management said.

"The deceased, Monwabisi Nguze, 39, was intoxicated at the time of the incident and went to bed without extinguishing a candle," said Cape Town head of disaster management Wilfred Solomons-Johannes.

He said 80 shacks were destroyed, leaving 400 people homeless. The fire, which started just after 01:00, destroyed most of the residents' belongings.

Humanitarian relief in the form of food, blankets and clothes were being provided for the victims, he said.

Rob Gill says... The ANC has more political and financial power than the DA, thus when the DA manages to gain control of a district/region, the ANC quickly mobilises the resources to try and overturn that, via whatever tactics they think will work best. 6000 'volunteers'? What exactly are they gaining from all of this? I'm sure they've been well coached on what to say and they will be handsomely rewarded. The question is whether they will succeed. Personally I hope not, because surely the ANC have had more than enough time to bring about positive change, and the people deserve better. Hopefully they don't succumb to the mindnumbing rhetoric of the ANC. Read the article...
