Cape Flats residents march against crime

cAPE tOWN - About 50 people from the Athlone, Crawford Residents and Ratepayers
Association (Acrra) on Wednesday marched to the Western Cape
provincial legislation and the Cape Town city council to voice
their concerns over crime on the Cape Flats.
The marchers carried a variety of placards declaring "Justice to
the People" and "We need effective policing" on their long walk
from the Good Hope Centre, first to the council offices and then
the provincial legislature.
A memorandum read out by Acrra leader Randall Meyer to Pierre
Oosthuizen, acting on behalf of Community Safety MEC Hennie Bester,
demanded that their area's community policing forum be
restructured.
Other demands were for police to investigate all crimes and stop
"losing" dockets, and that the drug trade and shebeens be shut
down.
Oosthuizen accepted the memorandum and promised to convey their
concerns to Bester.
He said Bester was not in his office on Wednesday, nor would he be
in on Thursday, but promised the MEC would respond by Wednesday
next week.
The march ended with a prayer "for the people and the police". - Sapa
