Cape Town – Cape Town traffic officials have been hard at work to clear the gridlock caused after the N1 was closed when a truck lost its load, crushing a bakkie.

With many drivers opting for the N2 instead, traffic backed up as well.

Even in the CBD cars were bumper to bumper as motorists made their way home.

At 14:40 a truck collided with a bridge causing it to lose its load (a 24-ton barge) and crushing a bakkie.

Miraculously the driver of the bakkie survived.

“The container caught on the fly-over bridge and was pushed off the trailer. Unfortunately it came to land on top of the bakkie,” ER24’s Christo Venter told News24.

Rescuers had to use the jaws of life to free the driver of the bakkie, who'd been trapped in the cabin.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A crane was brought in to remove the 24-ton barge.

The Cape Town Freeway tweeted, just after 18:00, that the scene had been cleared and all lanes were open.
