Cape Town - A Cape Town policeman shot dead his family then turned his gun on himself in Strand, it was reported on Tuesday.

The Daily Voice reported that Sergeant Max Phakamile Gwanya, 37, got into an argument with his wife Nosivuyise, 37, on Sunday night and stormed out of the house to his vehicle.

Gwanya, who was stationed at the Bellville commercial crimes unit, fetched his service pistol and returned to the house, where he shot dead his sister-in-law.

He reportedly then followed his wife and 4-year-old son Phamamile Jr out of the house and shot them dead, before killing himself.

Eyewitness Ashley Mourratts told the newspaper he hid away from the policeman when he saw him cock his gun.

"The first gunshot scared me and then the wife started screaming 'stop it, stop it'," he said.

"Then she ran outside through the kitchen door and he followed them and shot her by the rubbish bin.

"She fell down and he stood over them and almost emptied the gun on them."

The motive for the shooting was not known.

Police confirmed that murder cases and an inquest had been opened.
