Cape Town - A Manenberg policeman has been suspended as the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) continues its probe into a rape claim.

IPID is also investigating a case of sexual assault against the same officer.

Its spokesperson, Grace Langa, confirmed the matter had been referred to the Department of Public Prosecution for further action.

The inquiry followed a complaint by a Manenberg woman last Saturday who alleged she was raped by the officer.

The woman had been detained in the holding cells for burglary at the time.

“During the investigation it emerged that another charge had been laid, where it was alleged a woman had been sexually assaulted on July 2 after visiting the station to have documents certified,” Langa said.

She went on to say that the officer had not been arrested as the investigation was still underway.
