Cape Town - Police are investigating claims that a Cape Town mother rented out her teenaged girl as a sex slave for R50, it was reported on Wednesday.
She allegedly took her 13-year-old daughter to bushes or shebeens in Atlantis where she offered her to men, The Daily Voice reported.
The woman apparently used the money to buy herself alcohol.
The girl told a friends about the abuse, and the friend told a teacher.
She was taken to a shelter on Monday, when a case of rape and child prostitution was opened.
Police confirmed that they were looking for the woman and that they were compiling a list of the men who had sex with the girl.
Atlantis ward councillor and abuse councillor Barbara Rass told the newspaper the woman's arrest should be swift and that she should help the police with their investigation.
"I feel no mercy should be given to mothers who sell their own offspring. The court should deal with her like they would deal with someone who had underage sex with a minor," said Rass.
