Cape Town - A fire in a Kommetjie informal settlement on Tuesday left 140 people homeless, the Cape Town disaster risk management centre said.

Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said the fire started before noon in Site 5, Masiphumelele, and destroyed 40 dwellings.

"It is suspected that a man who went to work failed to switch off his electronic stove, [and] that caused the fire."

Hot meals, clothing, blankets, baby packs and building materials were provided to the victims. No casualties were reported.
