Cape Town - A group of people were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday after three men were set alight in an apparent mob justice attack in Lwandle at the weekend, Western Cape police said.

A resident of Freedom Park had apparently accused the men of stealing a cellphone and cash on Sunday, said police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk.

The community assaulted the men, aged 18 to 23, and they died after being necklaced with burning tyres.

“Sterling police investigation led to the arrest of five suspects on Tuesday morning at approximately 02:00 in relation to this incident,” said Van Wyk.

The police spokesperson said the arrests clearly indicated there was trust between the police and the community.

“Police would like to thank the community for the information they provided that led to the arrest of the suspects.

"We further discourage the acts of this nature in our communities and people should refrain from taking law into their own hands,” he added.

The group, aged 22 to 38, are set to appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
