Cape Town highways reopened after protest

2015-02-28 14:31

Cape Town - The R300 and N2 highways in Cape Town were reopened on Saturday afternoon following a brief protest, the Western Cape Traffic department said.

"We do not know where these people [the protesters] are from, they may be from Khayelitsha," spokesperson Kenny Africa said.

"It seems like it was a service delivery protest [but] we did not get any information from them."

He said the highway was reopened around 12:40. This was after a few residents started throwing stones at cars travelling on the roads earlier in the day.

A crowd of around 300 people were dispersed and the stones had since been cleared, Africa said.

Police and traffic police were monitoring the area.
