Cape Town - A Cape Town man was arrested for allegedly strangling his mother in Philippi, it was reported on Tuesday.

The Cape Argus reported that the man, 37, allegedly killed his mother on Sunday, then went to a tavern for a beer and told patrons there that he had a dead body at his house.

He allegedly then said he was going to "wait until dark to get rid of it".

A relative of the 55-year-old woman said he found her lying face up on the bed with a necktie wrapped tightly around her throat.

It was alleged the two got into an argument shortly before her death.

Her son was arrested on Sunday and would appear in the Athlone Magistrate's Court later on Tuesday.
