2012-04-16 17:36

Cape Town - A man will appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate's Court for allegedly killing a 12-year-old girl and injuring two others, Western Cape police said on Monday.

Warrant Officer November Filander said two rival gangs shot at each other on the corner of Vlamboom and Vaalbos streets in Bonteheuwel on Saturday night.

A boy and girl, both 12, and a 17-year-old girl, were caught in the crossfire. The young girl died on the scene. The boy was shot in his left cheek and the teenager in her right foot.

Another shoot-out followed when the police arrived. They arrested a man, 21, with a 9mm pistol and ammunition in his possession.

He was set to appear in court on Tuesday.

Please do not refer to a child as a kid, that is disrespectful, especially under such tragic circumstances

I wonder who this jerk is who delights in handing out thumbs down to every comment to News24 items? Tough when you have only a single operating brain cell isn't it?

What crap reporting! I see no mention of goats anywhere in the article. Surely this "kid" deserves the right and respect to be called a 'young girl'. RIP.

It's time for an end to mitigate/extenuating circumstances. If you commit a crime with a gun/knife - min 25yrs to life. If you kill someone, even inadvertently, in the commission of a crime, min 25yrs to life. No more of this 'minimum 15yrs with 9yrs off for good behaviour'. We also need harsher minimums AND a 3-strikes law for possession of illegal firearms, possession and/or being under the influence of drugs and alcohol, hi-jacking, rape, home-invasions. 3-strikes meaning when you're busted for the 3rd time for same/similar mandatory life without the possibility of parole.

I could not agree more. Sadly we (the World) seem to have gone soft on criminals. What did Dickens write? "The law is a ass"! It sure is!

@Robin - well that is something concrete we can lobby our ward councillors /parliamentary representatives about. Our human rights to live without fear and oppression are abused every day by gun-wielding, knife-toting, drug-deranged people.
