Cape Town - A man has been sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for starting a fire that killed his brother and injured his family, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.

Owen Gwede, 20, was sentenced for murder, attempted murder, and arson in the Western Cape High Court on Monday, Captain Frederick van Wyk said.

He placed a mattress in front of 30-year-old Elijah Mudziso's bedroom in the early hours of 7 June 2011 and set it alight.

Mudziso, his wife, and their 2-year-old child were trapped inside the house. He forced open the door and ran to the nearest police station.

Neighbours helped his wife and child to escape by jumping through the bathroom window.

Van Wyk said the family spent an extended time in hospital being treated for burns. Mudziso died a week later.
